According to data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 8.4 billion pounds of landfill waste were attributed to returns in 2023 alone. In 2023 alone, approximately 81% of U.S. retailers adopted stricter return processes that included shorter timeframes for returns and the introduction of fees. Surprisingly, companies like Amazon and Target are leading the charge by allowing customers to keep items while still receiving refunds.
