Recently, international police successfully infiltrated a massive fraud website called LabHost, which was utilized by thousands of criminals to deceive individuals into providing personal information such as email addresses, passwords, and bank details. The Britain’s Metropolitan Police revealed that approximately 2,000 criminals were using LabHost to steal users’ personal details.
As a result of the investigation, authorities have identified nearly 70,000 individual victims in the U.K. who fell victim to this fraudulent scheme. The Metropolitan Police have already arrested 37 suspects in connection to this criminal network. Furthermore, it was discovered that LabHost had obtained a staggering 480,000 credit card numbers, 64,000 PIN codes, and over 1 million passwords used for various websites and online services.
Police have taken action to contact up to 25,000 victims in the U.K. who have been affected by this data breach. The operation to dismantle LabHost was a crucial step in ensuring that victims were made aware of the compromise of their personal information. It is evident that the criminals behind LabHost were targeting key personally identifiable information, such as bank details and passwords, by creating deceptive websites that mimicked legitimate platforms.
Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service, Dame Lynne Owens, emphasized the importance of collaboration in combating online fraud. She highlighted the fact that criminals often believe they can operate with impunity in the digital realm, but the successful takedown of LabHost demonstrated otherwise. Private companies, including blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis, Intel 471, Microsoft, The Shadowserver Foundation, and Trend Micro, played a crucial role in assisting law enforcement agencies in identifying and dismantling LabHost.
The investigation into LabHost began in June 2022 after receiving intelligence from the Cyber Defense Alliance, an intelligence-sharing alliance between financial institutions and law enforcement agencies. The collaborative efforts of the Metropolitan Police’s Cyber Crime Unit, the National Crime Agency, City of London Police, Europol, regional U.K. authorities, and international law enforcement agencies were instrumental in taking down this massive criminal network.
The infiltration of LabHost by international police serves as a significant victory in the fight against cybercrime.
